İyengar Yoga received its name from BKS Iyengar, a direct student of T. Krishnamacharia. Together with Pattabhi Jois (who developed Ashtanga yoga), he is partially responsible for bringing modern yoga practice to the West as we know now.
Iyengar yoga focuses in three directions: alignment, ranking and timing.
Alignment means maintaining the intended pose when respecting the boundaries of the body. Iyengar Yoga encourages the use of stage to help in an asana without the risk of injury. Effective alignment can help to balance between body, mind and breath.
The ranking refers to the order of implementation of postures. This allows the physical and emotional body to progress safely and structured with the ‘opening’ and balance of the body.
Timing: Unlike Vinyasa Yoga, Iyengar yoga poses are kept longer. When stability is provided in a pose, it is possible to intensify the depth of the posture safely. This helps to develop strength and flexibility as well as sensitivity and awareness between the body and mind.
