SIBO is a digestive disorder, which means “excessive bacterial proliferation in the small intestines”. Normally, billions of bacteria in the intestines experience and support digestion. However, in SIBO, the number of these bacteria increases extremely and causes various symptoms in the intestines.
Symptoms of SIBO include gas, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, food intolerance and food absorption. These symptoms usually occur immediately after the meal or a few hours after eating.
SIBO’s causes include a lack of stomach acid, slowing in bowel movements, diverticulitis, intestinal obstruction, Crohn’s disease, bowel surgery or antibiotic use. SIBO’s diagnosis can be performed by tests such as hydrogen breath test or a sample analysis in the intestine.
Treatment is usually performed with antibiotics, but dietary changes, prebiotics, probiotics and other natural treatments can also be used.
SIBO may be a chronic condition and it is possible that symptoms are repeated, so regular follow -up and treatment is important.
